New "Free" Board Wipe is a Godsend for Typal Decks

Share

Lorwyn Eclipsed spoiler season is officially over, and it’s safe to say that typal decks are getting a solid round of support. Whether you’re a fan of going wide with Goblins or Elementals, this set should provide a big boost to your EDH decks.

Between all the creatures and Kindred spells that are soon to be released, one of the cards that stands out the most is actually a board wipe of sorts. While board wipes are usually considered a major weakness for typal decks, this new card puts a unique spin on the classic Wrath effect that helps typal decks get in on the action.

Winnowing MTG

In most cases, when players think of board wipes in EDH, they think of complete battlefield resets. The best board wipe options, however, are actually those that leave you ahead on board, like Cyclonic Rift. Unfortunately, many of the options with the most raw power, including Plague Wind, cost too much mana to make great use of. Yet, thanks to Convoke, Winnowing can be cast for free and still have a completely devastating effect on your opponents. Getting around Indestructible is a massive added bonus considering the popularity of Heroic Intervention effects in Commander.

In order to maximize Winnowing, you’ll want to build out a board of creatures that all have the same creature type. Any number of Commanders from Alela, Artful Provocateur to Edgar Markov should make this a trivial task. Assuming your opponents have varied creature types among their threats, you can force each of them to keep their weakest creatures only.

Unfortunately, Winnowing won’t pair well into some Commander decks you may run into. Both Voltron and opposing Typal decks make it difficult to get good value out of Winnowing. Fortunately, there is a way to get around this. Forbidden Orchard can give your opponent a Spirit, allowing Winnowing to get rid of any other threat.

Generating Extra Value

As strong as Winnowing is in an ordinary typal deck, the sorcery has even higher upside if you can take advantage of its sacrifice clause. Malik, Grim Manipulator and Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher both are great examples of Commanders that can provide a ton of extra value.

Similarly, legends like Depala, Pilot Exemplar that reward you for tapping them synergize perfectly with Winnowing’s Convoke cost. This way, you don’t risk losing Depala in combat, and you should have a lot of extra mana left over to sink into the Dwarf’s triggered ability.

By maximizing all that Winnowing has to offer, the sorcery could end up being one of the most powerful cards in your whole deck. What makes the card even more appealing is its price tag, with presale listings already falling below $2. Lorwyn Eclipsed is truly a dream set for typal enthusiasts.
